The External Relations Office ("the Office") advises and assists the Director-General in all matters concerning external relations of the Organization. The Office coordinates the relations with governments, international organizations, funding agencies, and research institutions such as universities and accelerator laboratories. The Office is headed by the External Relations Coordinator. The Coordinator represents CERN in external relations matters when the Director-General is unavailable.

In particular, the Office assists the Director-General in

  • shaping and implementing external relations strategies;

  • strengthening the cooperation with Member States, Observers and Council Delegations;

  • fostering increased collaboration with Non-Member States and international organizations through the conclusion and implementation of cooperation agreements, in close collaboration with the CERN Legal Service;

  • facilitating the collaboration of external research institutions in CERN projects.

The Office maintains a complete and up-to-date record of the participation of the Member States, and of collaborating states, organizations and institutes, in the CERN programme.
